The music industry in the UK is flailing. Sales of albums in the United Kingdom fell from 11% last year and major, established artists now finding that album sales are not their main source of income.
Enter Harvest Entertainment, the management services for industry entertainment. Harvest put their marketing skills to good use clever and controversy have found a new way in which groups and pop stars alike can increase revenues from record sales.
Placebo, McFly and madness are just three bands related to the company are now looking for brands appropriate to support them.
The entertainment company was launched in late 2007 and is directed by Ric Salmon, a man's knowledge when it comes to the music industry. Former Vice President of Warner Music International, Salmon is well aware of the transformation of the music industry undergoing.
Since the introduction of world wide web, illegal downloads have gone through the roof, thus reducing sales carried in stores. Similar bands and labels have been severely affected, and therefore turned to merchandising and touring as sources of revenue higher.
Yes, the model of traditional music remains intact, but the artists are more open to venture to new avenues. Take Prince, for example, mega star with a back catalog that would humble any X Factor or American Idol winner, he still opted for alternative back at his past works, the planet Earth. Instead of traditional sales, he decided to give free copies of The Mail on Sunday.
Then there's Radiohead, who has successfully released its latest album, In Rainbows, for download only for the months just before the release later it appropriate. An instant success, the album reached the top spot in both the United Kingdom and United States of downloads alone.
Harvest Entertainment is not alone in their adventures in the world of music. International Coffee giant Starbucks has also secured in law, with the release of the first Studio album by Paul McCartney in over two years.
Selling Out? Dear God, no. Macca claims "It's a new world now and people think new ways to reach people and it has always been my goal. "If coffee drinking population of the world already know which is the legend, then something is very wrong.
Starbucks said: "This demonstrates how Hear Music can present even the artists who record The most successful of all time with unique opportunities to reach existing fans, and a new audience of listeners. "
Similarly, the dance duo Groove Armada have recently emerged from a five-year contract with Jive Records, one of the many arms of the machine from Sony BMG. They have since opted for a one-year agreement with drinks and tea, Bacardi, which will see the brand finance a four track EP. In exchange, Groove Armada have agreed to Bacardi sponsored play at various events across the globe.
So, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, indeed. Bands benefit immensely Supports major brands. They [the brands] have the money for studio time, tours and parties as they get the added kudos "Own" group.
While this may seem like the next logical step in the evolution of music distribution, die hard fans of groups more underground like Kings of Leon or LCD Soundsystem may have more difficulty in accepting this new found love with brands. The sale is definitely an end be born at the mouth of thousands of pubescent teenagers across the globe. And we all know what happens when someone is deemed to have exhausted: Leisure Cease and falling sales.
So, only time will tell whether or not the Marks and the band live in harmony, or whether consumers realize they are dried by the proverbial scrotum.
